The difference between a website and a web app

Website or web app? The words get used interchangeably, while the difference decides what you have built and what it costs. A plain-language explainer.

"We want a website. Or is it a web app? What is the difference anyway?" It is a question that comes up more often than you would think, and a fair one. The words get used interchangeably, while the difference decides what you have built and roughly what it costs. Let us explain it in plain language.

A website: your story, findable and clear

A website is, at its core, meant to show information. Who you are, what you do, your products or services, your contact details. The visitor reads, clicks through and gets in touch or requests a quote. Think of a company site, a portfolio or a blog.

It works straight away in the browser, it is findable through Google, and it is all about clarity. For a lot of SMBs this is exactly enough, and then having a good website built is the smartest first step.

A web app: software that runs in your browser

A web app looks like a website at first glance, but you actually do something with it. You log in, you enter data, you collaborate, you calculate something or you manage something. It still runs in the browser, without you having to download anything, but under the hood it is real software.

Examples you probably know: your online accounting package, a customer portal, a planning tool, a dashboard. All web apps. They do not just show information, they let you do something with it. Want something like that built? See how we do web application development.

The simple difference: information versus actions

Boiled down: a website mainly lets you see something, a web app mainly lets you do something. A site that tells your story is a website. The moment people log in, exchange data or carry out tasks, you are in web app territory.

The line is not always razor sharp, and it does not need to be. A website with a smart contact form or a simple webshop sits somewhere in the middle. What counts is knowing which side you are mostly on, because that decides the build, the upkeep and the price.

And where does a mobile app fit in?

A web app and a mobile app get mixed up too. The big difference: a web app runs in the browser, a mobile app you install from the App Store or Play Store. A web app can feel just like an app on your phone, without a download.

When a real mobile app adds value, think camera, push notifications or daily use, we have laid that out separately on our page about app development. Often a web app turns out to be enough. Weighing all three? Our decision guide, native app, web app, or website, walks you through it.

What do you need?

Usually it comes down to this. Do you want to be found and tell your story? Then you are looking for a website. Do you want people to log in and really do something? Then you are heading towards a web app. And sometimes it is a combination: a findable website with a gated piece of web app behind it.
